After a very slow morning – getting up but thirsty for more sleep, I did my usual (2 days now = “usual”) of sitting in the lodge and posting yesterday’s blog using their wifi.
Returned to the trailer for lunch and a couple of short dog walks, unsuccessfully tried to nap, got up, left the pooches with a fan blowing on them and made my way to the trail head of Castle Trail.
Let me back up a bit . . .
While the days were getting colder for a while there, and the nights close to freezing, today it was a blazing 84 degrees. Two issues with this turn of events – one, it’s a challenge leaving the dogs anywhere when it’s so hot, but with a usb-charged fan and water, water, water, we all manage.
The bigger issue is the damn carpenter ants I brought with me from Orcas. The first couple of years having the trailer, I was diligent about keeping them at bay. Not so much the last couple of years. Every day I squish at least five crunchy beasts, and I’m sure there are hundreds more hidden in my walls. Where are those freezing temperatures when you need them? So done with those little suckers.
Back to the hike – Boring, dusty, dry and HOT. A positive? Hmmmmmm . . . . Imagining how our ancestors (not mine) actually homesteaded on this land. What hard lives they must have had. Me? I eagerly returned to my AC’d truck and drove back to the campsite to hug my pooches.
Tomorrow . . . Off to stay with Danny (nephew) in Minneapolis and to pick up Lucas at midnight . . . Yea!
