I’m settled into a KOA around Gorham, Maine where my Murray ancestors lived. The state records, however, are housed in Augusta, Maine, and there is a set of archives located there – or so I thought. I tried to make an appointment (the only way to access these archives) via email and phone, but no calls back and no emails, so I just showed up. Glad I did because the guy there told me they did not have any records related to historical Maine, but he did give me the address for the library where genealogical information is kept.
So, off I went to the library. I’d say this was pretty much a dud. The library has books upon books of Maine families but none for the Murrays – which surprised both the librarian there and me. I did find Arnold Murray listed in the 1812 war pensions volume, but for the most part, I felt as though I had hit a dead end. The librarian said I’d likely have more success with the Gorham historical society – which is on my list to visit tomorrow.
Mixed in with all this non-excitement was the day with Lucas. He wanted Kipper to meet up with another Icelandic Sheepdog not too far from the Augusta airport, so after breakfast, off we went. Kipper played and played with his distant cousin from Maine. Lucas was so happy to one, meet up with another Icelandic Sheepdog, and two, get all that puppy energy out of Kipper before his flight home.
I left Lucas off at the Augusta airport so he and Kipper could take a puddle jumper over to Boston and then a flight to Seattle. Needless to say, the emptiness from his departure left me with a deep sense of sadness. Finding info on the Murrays would definitely have helped but that wasn’t to be.
